MAF question
seen and answered this question,so bare
with me here.
i know that if you remove the screen and port
out the maf sensor you will run into problems
i was wondering,if you port out the maf ends
and the plastic, but leave the screen on
to straiten the air flow past the maf sensor hot wires,if that will work or will it still
give out erattic reading and give you problems
thanx! i realy appreciate it
Personally, I don't recommend porting your MAF, unless you have some means handy to correct your fueling if you run into problems (LS1 Edit, MAFT, something like that).
If you are dying to port something, port your throttle-body. There a significant gains to be made (~2-7 HP) by porting your TB, setting your blade opening to 99%, and knife edging your throttle blade.
Good Luck,

X-Acto blade and an overnight soak in paint
remover. I know this.
MAF screen serves to even out the flow across
the face of the MAF orifice. This comes at the
cost of some restriction. Without the screen you
may see some MAF error at different flows as the
air stream crowds to the outside of bends etc.
Some vehicles see this worse than others.
Porting the MAF increases the flow cross section
but you have done nothing to the electronics'
calibration to tell it this. Embedded in the cal
is the assumption that the "effective cooling
area" of the sense resistors bears a particular
ratio to the flow area. Youchange flow area but
not cal, you get a MAF that under-reports flow
and sends the motor lean (until LTFT learns to
cover it).
I have never seen a decent flow bench comparison
of stock MAF, descreened stock MAF, ported stock
MAF and the aftermarket MAFs. So it's hard to
say which of them is better (free or otherwise)
in this respect.
Introducing the mixture error is a crapshoot, I
think it's a better bet on the earlier rich-running years than later lean program cars. The
MAF is something I wouldn't screw with until a
lid and ported TB and cold ram air are there.
It's an iffy deal. porting the MAF. Do it to a
spare set of ends, at least.
i have ported the t/b and opend the butterfly
to around 4.64v and nife bladed the butterfly
have done ramair,hood and mod.
its got a lid and strait tube intake, all my own
design and engineering and it all works great
just trying to get every little bit out of the engine. and i have got the screen off with no damage, bearly though
it seems logical that the ported maf with the screen will work but i can see if it dont
thanks!
