Default Stock Cats Question

How often do the stock cats go bad? My car has 59k on it and im getting a O2 code ses light. car has lid and hooker cat back with a cut out. The ses light goes off and on when ever it feels like. gonna try to fix it this week end.

2000 z28.

any help would be great

thanks

Also i have the cut out open. Could open exaust at the y pipe send a code? the cut out is after the cats on the 3" after market y pipe the cats are about 2 1/2 feet from the open cutout.

If it's getting an O2 SES, why not replace the O2? Stock cats last a long time unless you have disabled the cat protection in the PCM firmware.

I think the cutout could be the problem also; fresh air can get sucked in and hit the O2s. Maybe someone with a cutout could verify that.

Stock cats should last a long time. Of course, modding can shorten the life. The cutout should be far enough away for the O2 sensors to allow them to work correctly. Have you scanned the car to determine what the code actually is?

if it's precat then not Cat related

Assuming post cat, I would swap the sensors and see if the code follows... if it does it's the sensor

If it doesn't follow it's the cat ... there is I believe an 8year/80k mile warranty on emissions parts so may wanna see if you can get a dealer to hook you up... (though take off your aftermarket goodies just in case)

Usually if the cat gets broken up inside itll put out a P0420 code a low cat efficiency code.
