Default Question regarding tuning/diagnostic software

I am looking into getting some software for my laptop to both diagnose my car <if need be> and tune it. What should I be looking into? I see so many different programs out there and I am having a hard time making sense of what's what.......need to start somewhere........I would like to have the capability to hook my laptop to my car and follow the service manual flow charts to diagnose problems myself instead of having to take it in somewhere to have them do it<I.E. test circuits and components>, as well as delete codes and tune. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Well, the only 2 scanning/tuning software suites are HP Tuners and EFILive. Both are very good and easy to use. With both, you can see the output of every sensor and log data to review in detail. Personally, I use HP Tuners V2.0 and love it. Click Me

Both HPTuners and EFILive have Scan Tools and Tune Tools.

The scan tools are very extensive and allow you to do the service manual diagnoses.

The tune tunes are also very extensive and easy to use.

Thanks guys for getting me pointed in the right direction. Dumb question though......do either of the programs come with tutorials or instructions, or is it a "figure it out as you go". Once again, thanks!

They both come with help documents for the scan and tune tools, and include some tutorials.

HPTuners also has online web help, as Keith said, which is very cool.

For EFILive see here: http://www.efilive.com/download.aspx#tutorials

Also, you can download the EFILive software (without a licence it runs in demo mode) and play with the sample logs and sample tunes; the installation includes the help docs and tutorials.

The scan tools also have bi-directional mode which lets you switch on/off all the engine/trans. relays and solenoids from your laptop; very handy for diagnosing problems.
