The black box can store any number of different tunes which you tailor yourself at a PC away from the car.

I don't know that much about engines yet but I would like to learn. With these programs can you really the mess the car up and how do you know what to do? I'd love to be able to do it myself instead of going somewhere to get it done. Also how do you know that if the car improved or not?

I hear you on the 2.73's...I just changed mine over to 3.42's last week! LOTS better. I picked up a Hypertech tonight off a friend for $50.00 just so I could get my shift points right, and to get the spedo straightened out. Seems like it helped a little bit; I went ahead and did the "performance tune".

You can still get into trouble with the handhelds (e.g. what if you commanded too much WOT timing and your WOT AFR was too lean...?).
The software ones let you use a wideband to see what is really going on (it provides log data to help you "self-tune" various tables pretty quickly).
