Default Knock Knock

First. Can someone briefly describe how knock sensors work?

Second. Being that I have never so much as removed an intake manifold bolt, what are the probable reasons for both sets to be throwing codes?

Third. I have 55,000 miles. Do these things just go bad sometimes?

And last. Is it harmful for me to drive it as is?

I've been running 91 octane.
I have poly motor mounts but have had no problems with them for a while.
My over-axle exhaust pipe has been knocking around recently.
I have not disconnected anything in the engine compartment or driven through any puddles recently.

Thanks a bunch.

There are a form of microphone, sensing vibration. If they detect detonation/pinking they tell the PCM that something is wrong, and the PCM retards the timing as a safty measure.

If you are suddenly getting loads of knock and wasn't before, perhaps bad fuel? clogged fuel filter? certainly drive carefully, dont get hard on it, the knock sensors are telling you something is wrong. I would say its unusual for knock sensors to go wrong.

Really you need to do some logging to find out more info on this, post your results.

Thanks for the microphone tip, Red. Cheers

I fixed the over-axle banging and the code has not come back.

So I finally pulled out my service manual. it says to check the knock sensor harness jumper located at the rear of the intake manifold.

I dont know what its talking about. I looked around and everything i could see seemed fine and I dont know how anything could work itself loose, they all have those blue plastic retainer clips on them.

So this is where i go off to the dealership.

I am having the same problem believe it or not. Knock sensors are going off after motor install. I have also installed poly motor mounts (coincedence?).

I am convinced these knock sensors are killing my power. Let us know what you find out...

Yeah, if you're throwing the code too.. i believe we are both running rich rich rich.. so it will def choke off some power.

I've not touched anything on my car in some time and the poly mounts went on a long time ago and i've never heard anyone esle have problems from the motor mounts, only trans mounts.

And since my code comes on immediately after i start, im pretty sure i just have a loose or maybe wet connection somewhere.. just dont know where.

Turns out it was some sort of body control module? Anyway, they didnt figure that out before taking my intake manifold off hope i hope they got it back on right.
