Reading a wiring diagram
Wiring diagram in question: http://shbox.com/1/ignswschematic.jpg
My question is, in order for the ignition switch to send power to the starter via the yellow wire, what has to happen other than the switch being in the "start" position? Anything?
My problem is i just installed a new ignition switch. I have power to the red wire, but no power to the yellow one, no matter what position I put the switch in. I have tried jumping the red to the yellow and the car will crank.
So is it possible that the new switch I bought is faulty? Or am I missing something in the diagram that needs to happen to allow the switch to power the yellow wire?
Since you stated that jumping the two wires (Red to Yellow) results in the motor cranking, the wiring and other electrical components are NOT in question. If you read infinite resistance (as I suspect), then you've just found your problem, an open in the I/S. Get another (!) new I/S and install it; hopefully, the problem will be solved.
Now, having said all that, it is assumed that you indeed put the I/S together correctly in the first place, so that when you turn the key to START the switch in fact does go to the START position.
Good luck!
