Default CASE relearn...when?

When would you want to do a case relearn? Is it absolutely necessary on a new motor install? Im just trying to get an idea of when everyone does it and what you look for before you do it.

any time the relationship to the crank, crank angle sensor, and/or the PCM changes. i.e., new crank, new pcm. Not a bad idea after a cam swap, or a full flash either.

so does a new motor install always need one or only if it causes problems?

yes. when a new motor is introduced, regardles if the crank was reused, the relationship between the crank reluctor and crank angle sensor has changed. if a new crank is used, you have a new reluctor, change in crank angle sesor relation, and the relation of both to the PCM has changed.

The crank reluctor is a map of the crank position. every reluctor is subject to machining tolorances. Anything that disturbs reading the map, or when a new map is used, CASE relearn should be performed.
