using other year .bin files for hptuners i have a 2000 pontiac trans am. There are several tunes I would like to try, many of them are not the same year. I have unlocked all 2000's. and way to make a tune with a different year work?
you would need to do a full rewrite & would need the licenses for both years...you could also use the compare feature to view differences between your current tune and the one your viewing, then just edit your stock file to match the other file & do a write calibration only, but there are bound to be some tables/parameters that you cant view in the editor that are different because there are thousands of parameters in the computer many of which you can't view.
Do not do a complete rewrite with a 98 bin file on your car. Just a warning. 
I would personally recommend following foff's advice about using the compare feature and making your adjustments that way... at least for the main tables. But if the bin isn't from a 98, you can do it either way.

Although there are a zillion params/tables and
not all compatible, most people don't mess
with that many. Use the compare, review the
differences you find methodically, understand
what they were meant for (or whether they
were dead-end, dumb moves that you -don't-
want to inherit). Adopt the things you think
are relevant and smart. If you're going to try
on somebody else's shorts, at least check for
skid marks.
