Locked Hypertech!
Locked Hypertech! I was looking at buying a Hypertech PPIII from another member just to change tire size and shift points and firmness. He told me it was locked but that it could be sent back to be unlocked. Is that true or is there any other options? Thanks!

Never heard of hypertech unlocking a locked unit
the unit will unlock once the tune is restored to stock
Also I would never recommend buying a used Hypertech from anyone you don't know... too big of a risk of getting burned
Predator is a better solution for used handhelds since you can send it back to get it unlocked (but you have to pay for it)

must be a new policy by hypertech
however... they will still be able to pull the PCM ID # from the stock tune... and my guess is that they'll set it up such that the PCM ID needs to match...
otherwise
Original purchaser buys HPP3 and tunes car
Person sells to someone else saying they can have HPP3 unlock
New Person now has a HPP3 that is much less than new value, which they can tune their car with
Unless hypertech is very stupid... this will not work from 1 vehicle to another (unless PCM is included)
otherwise it opens up a very easy method of using 1 unit to "tune" (most likely change gears or fans) multiple vehicles for much less than the cost of a new unit

But personally, I find this move risky. I would call Hypertech and ask first. Or find one that is not locked, which I would do first.

All predator tuner get VN locked as soon as you install the program, and it sed to be for $75 but last I heard it was $100 for them to unlock a locked unit, but it has to have the predator program in the unit and that car it was VIN matched to has to have the stock tune in it.

I had Westers tune a pcm for my 96 model truck and I shipped my stock one back to them. The new pcm I got from Westers has my vin #. I was wondering could you simply get a used pcm and have it "flashed" with the vin # that is locked in a hypertech programmer and then set the programmer back to stock. Is it only the vin # that is locking it or would the programmer know that it had never been installed on the new pcm.
