So I assume that your idle is under the point where they are used? If yes, all you need is a little VE tuning. TBH, I've never done this (on an LSx) but why not just pull fuel through the VE and let it idle with a new set of plugs and tune by the plugs and your VE table?

But you can run open loop and get much the same effect with stock PCM anyway, just not as nicely with the 98 due to dual VE and less resolution in the seconday ve.
(ie) As mentioned dont fuel off your O2 sensors. Use VE and/or MAF
