Some cars cruise well in the upper 30* range.

Timing can be changed all over the driving map. if you take a look at a timing table you will see why, there are tons of cells in the timing tables.

Ive not got loads of dyno experience. But from my few hours compared to my "best effort" street tune using a method similar to yours (jimmyblue) my timing was anywhere from bang on, to +/- 10* out. (ie) Nothing consistent.
If you are on a budget you can use the method to get close but you are going to be well down on power unless you hit the dyno.

Based on my experience. Id just get fueling right and go to a dyno. Budget for around 2-3hrs min and solely concentrate on your HO table.

Ive just made a whole lot of changes myself and Im not even going to bother doing anything on spark. Im just going to get fueling sorted and go to the dyno. There is no point wasting time on spark IMO.

Just how much is "well down on power"?

"well down" meaning you can feel the difference.
Not sure how to quantify that
