Question Auto vs. Manual ECU, couple questions...

Are the manual ecu's completely different from auto, like if the motor/ecu from a M6 was put into an A4 car would it be able to be tuned for an A4 setup?

I may be taking a car from someone on the board and it runs rough and needs a tune, he said everything(motor/trans/etc) are new and the trans just doesn't know when to shift really. Don't know if it has a M6 or A4 ecu or if there's a difference. The motor was taken from a rear-wrecked M6 car with the ecu/tune it had in it. Car now has a level 3 A4 in it with a 3500 converter.

He also said he's including the LS1 Edit program for it, but I have no laptop...will it help me at all to try and do it myself or should I just take it somewhere?

What are my options here? I have no problem spending $500 or so for a tune but I don't want to have to pay a fortune for an ecu if it needs it.

I believe they are different in the aspect of the m6 ECU is unable to control the a4 but I have heard of people taking an M6 ECU to their local dealership and having it reflashed with an A4 program. Not sure what this costs though. You might try calling a dealership to find out the price of a reflash.

The hardware is the same for the 99-02 pcms auto or manual.

You just need your existing computer tuned for the auto. It should be able to be done with the LS1 edit you're getting.

The computer needs to be reflashed for the proper operating system for an A4 of the same year model car as a starting place. Probably one of the easiest fixes would be to send the powertrain control module (PCM) to someone that does mailorder tunes and give them the specs for the engine and mods (CID, cam specs, heads, etc.).
