Think of ignition timing like being up to bat at the plate. Swing too soon and you hit a quick line-drive foul ball (and you may even take out a buddy or two in the dugout - detonation). Swing too late and it's a weak foul ball. Swing just right and you sky a homerun 500+ft dead centerfield.
The point is, more timing isn't always better. The easiest way to find optimal timing is on a dyno. Make some changes, keep what works, and ditch what doesn't. Arbitrarily adding timing isn't going to do you any good.
That being said, running more than 29* before/after peak torque or more than 26* at peak torque will probably be too much and cause KR on a stock 98~00 f-body. 01~02 f-bodies don't seem to like more than 20~22* just before peak torque, 18~19* at peak torque, and topping off around 24* at redline. At least, that's what I've noticed being ~800ft above sea level. Change the altitude up and the game changes.

I'd say, more often than not, dialing in the AFR is where most of the power gains are on stock setups. You can try adding a couple degrees of timing if you have dyno runs to do back-to-back comparisons on. But (again), arbitrarily adding timing to a stock motor isn't something I'd suggest to anyone.
