1st READ a lot. HP tuners, EFI live forums are a great start
Now if that hasn't scared you off (it shouldn't) read some more. Advanced Tuning by Greg Banish is a great book.
Finaly get a wideband just to keep yourself safe. Its a great tool to confirm you are doing what you think you are doing.

Tuning isn't that tough you just need to be comfortable with a PC and some basic concepts.

It goes in the exhaust. The exact location has been a subject of debate, but it is a requirement for setting your Open Loop or WOT part of the tune, which is where all your power is made. If you are not going to invest in one, just pay someone else to do the job and be done with it. For the record, it is a wideband O2 sensor, which outputs a much wider voltage range than the narrowband O2 sensors that come in the car (0-1v). It will come with a gauge for the reading, a way of logging the data to your computer, and a way to input it into your tuning software for a good reading during your runs.
AFA needing someone else to correct your mistakes, I cannot agree. The most important thing is to always have a copy of each tune saved somewhere, so if you do make a mistake you can go back to a previous reasonably good tune.
Probably the first thing to keep in mind is that everyone who tunes right now, started from scratch. As others have stated, read, read, read.
Banish's book is an excellent text and a good read.

A word of advise is to always keep the baseline tune. When you make changes, save it under another tune name so you can always go back if you don't like your changes.
