Default Is Dyno tuning really worth it?

I hear everybody saying don't waste your money on a hpp3 since i have a 98. I want to get a dyno tune, but do I have to get my own program first or can I just go to the shop and they tune it there. Does anyone know of anywhere near ST. Louis MO that does this? Or are there any other tuning options for me. I have Lt's, slp maf, 3 mandrel bent all the way out. 3.90 gears. Or is it worth my time and money with these few mods? I'm really tired of my speedo being off though.

You have several options:
The HPP will adjust for the gear, but the tune is poor, at best, in my own personal experience.
You could do a mail order tune.
You could purchase your own program and teach yourself how to tune.
You can get it dyno tuned and drive it away.
All options have positives and negatives.
This is where search (I hate to say that, but it is true), is your friend, as well as reading the stickies at the top of this section.
Best of luck.

I have a buddy that went from 298 HP on a dyno jet to 319 on a mustang dyno with just a lid and a tune. Thats a pretty big jump with just some tuning. Id say its worth it.

i say pickup a wideband and tuning program, and do it yourself. i cant justify paying 550-600 for a one time tune. MAYBE if it includes free updates without paying for dyno time, MAYBE...

Get it street tuned or do it yourself.

IMO the dyno has two purposes:

1) Safety. Some cars you can't hit WOT on the street without almost killing someone.
2) Direct comparison before and after of how mods affect your car.

+1.. If you can find someone who will do it at a reasonable price and who is good at it.. I picked up 6 or 8 rwhp from a dyno tune.. The guy who did it is a freaking wizard at it too..

Is 200 dollars a decent price for a dyno tune?

I would say that on a stock car, the gain is at most minimal. After cam, is a must. Just wait to install the cam and then get a tune.

man cars with LTs and a few other boltons typically gain a good bit on the rollers...

if your car is an automatic do it ASAP, once they change the shift points and firmness it will make your car feel much sportier and fun to drive.. not to mention the slp maf and longtubes are prolly making you run slightly lean... a street tune is good, but a full dyno tune is best.. plus you will see what kind of numbers you are putting down

This is a typical tune session. We tuned a 2003 Z06 with a Borla. No other modifications.

Even if you tune yourself a dyno tune is mandatory in my book. No other way you will optimise spark unless you can see exactly what timing is required for MBT.
Self Dyno tune FTW!

If you have access to a dyno, use it, much safer plus you can control the environment (temps, speeds etc) to iron out any slight issues you might encounter.
One thing many people also forget is to try to use a load bearing dyno whenever possible as it simulates real street conditions via a load on the rollers based on vehicle weight and drag coefficient, vs an inertia dyno where you spin a set of rollers. Not as crucial on non-forced induction vehicles but a must for especially turbo's.
