Air density is still used, aka speed density system. During closed loop the MAF will take control of fuel management but still relies on the Air Density System for reference. For example in closed loop -
The MAF measures the mass (quantity) of the air entering the engine. Now, only two specific sensors provide the PCM with the BASIC information for the fuel management portion of its operation. Engine speed from the CKP signal and the quantity of air entering the engine from the MAF sensor. The Air density system is used with the fuel management system to determine timing. The air density system is also used to monitor Mass Air Flow sensor operation to determine if there is a MAF sensor malfunction.
Open Loop operation and PE mode - MAF, MAP, ECT TP and yes IAT sensors ALL are used to calculate you’re A/F aka injector on-time. Now, when there is a failure, the PCM goes into FEM (Fail and Effects mode) in which only the air density system is used to calculate a substitute mass air flow signal.
