Default What is the resistor ohm!!!!!!

I was on ebay, and they are selling a "chip" mod that will give me 5-15hp for $10. Yeah right, it's just a resistor, I want to do this mod so I need to know where it is located on the car, and what ohm it is. Thanks All!!!

Its the air intake temperature sensor. I have not seen where it adds power. It only pulls timing at higher (hot) temperatures and doesn't add any at cooler temps according to the table on LS1-Edit.

I have been told toput in a 5.9k or a 4.7k ohm resistor in. Where do I put it? I was also told that it increases gas mileage, hp, torque, and increases the sound of the exhaust.

I would not recommend this mod, the PCM uses the IAT to calculate Mass Flow rate through the MAF and reduce timing at high temps. Its the first part I would be worried about. As Felton said, it doesn't help with timing unless the IAT see's over 150 degrees.

The IAT sensor is on the driver side of air box near bellows. I don't know why but I seem to be the only one on this site who likes this mod. I use a 4.7K in summer and 5.9K in winter. Not true that it only works if air temp is 150. As soon as you turn the key you'll hear it! My motor just comes alive. It takes a few miles for the pcm to adjust, runs a little rich at first. I have a Borla and it got a lot louder. Horsepower, milage, went up. Just unplug the sensor and put the resistor in place of it. I would never run without it. Been using it for 9K miles and no problems. If it advances too much the KR sensors pull the timing back but it is still advanced more then stock. Just made my car more fun to drive. 2 bucks from radio shack.

Hey WS6, not flaming you or anything but show me where it adds timing due to the IAT?

If the picture doesnt show up, its cause I suck at the internet......

I think the climate has a play in all of this. Maybe it does work for some, and not others because of the humidity and temp. I think it is worth a try for $.80 dont you? If it doesn't work then you just take it out and you lost a whole $.80.

FELTON316 - Well you can do a search on Timing tricker. I have been a mechanic my whole life, I'm 50. I've owned my own garage and smog check station. Rebuilt over 100 engines. I currently work for Union Pacific Railroad rebuilding 6000 horsepower turbo diesels. I know timing advance when I see it. My WS6 even takes longer to warm up now, must have been throwing a long flame due to late timing. When I use too much advance I get ping and power drops. Don't know what else to say. When the IAT sees hot air like on a hot day timing is retarded to prevent knock, and of course it's an emissions issue.

WS6 Rules, I didn't mean any offense by my post, nor question your abilities. I was just curious where this added timing is coming from? There is no table in the PCM (that I know) that adds timing due to cooler temps. The only table I see, pulls timing away if the air gets too hot to prevent detonation. The only PCM tables that I see that relate to timing are based on Gms/Cyl and rpm, except for the one mentioned above. Now I am not 50 or been a mechanic all my life (I do work on turbo diesels for marine applications, so we have something in common), but I've been playing with fuel injection for quite some time and I'm wanting to learn more everyday. I was just wondering if you found something that I have not yet seen. I have read about the timing tricker, and I only see it helping if incoming air is over 100F. Or if you're wanting timing retard for nitrous applications.

Just trying to learn.....

Hey Cat, regarding your link, I thought the MAF determines air density for the PCM? I know on older speed density cars IAT & MAP were used, but now the MAF should take care of that.

Partly right felton,
Air density is still used, aka speed density system. During closed loop the MAF will take control of fuel management but still relies on the Air Density System for reference. For example in closed loop -
The MAF measures the mass (quantity) of the air entering the engine. Now, only two specific sensors provide the PCM with the BASIC information for the fuel management portion of its operation. Engine speed from the CKP signal and the quantity of air entering the engine from the MAF sensor. The Air density system is used with the fuel management system to determine timing. The air density system is also used to monitor Mass Air Flow sensor operation to determine if there is a MAF sensor malfunction.

Open Loop operation and PE mode - MAF, MAP, ECT TP and yes IAT sensors ALL are used to calculate you’re A/F aka injector on-time. Now, when there is a failure, the PCM goes into FEM (Fail and Effects mode) in which only the air density system is used to calculate a substitute mass air flow signal.
