Default USB to Serial Port Adapters

I have HPTuners and AutoTap, both of which use a serial port connection. My new laptop, with Windows XP, that I bought doesn't have a serial port.

I know people have had issues with adapters before, but I don't know which ones NOT to buy and which ones work well.

Any help is appreciated on what to buy or NOT buy. THANKS!!!

Keyspan is the HPTuners recommended adapter and worked well for me with XP and the HP Serial cable.

EDIT: Bill you sneaky SOB.... Beat me by seconds.

When it comes to these adapters, there are only a few manufacturers of the chipsets involved. But the individual implementation may vary, especially with no-name brands. Stick with a name brand, such as Belkin, and you should be good. Better yet, call the software company of the product you are interested in, and ask them which chipsets (or even adapters) that they support.
Worked in the industry while this transition was taking place, lots of stories here.

PCMCIA to Serial adaptors work much better. A lot of the USB ones can be troublesome for some reason

They aren't compliant in their adherence to the 232 standard. They are considered to be loose standards devices. Depending on what they are talking to, it may be a critical portion of the standard for the other device.

Good point on this! Somehow i knew you would chime in I need a few gigs of ram for my macbook

Ive had best luck changing a few of the settings as far as aftermarket EMS's go, 9600 usualy is plenty but a few times ive switched to 115,000 and its lightyears faster on datalogging.

I had a cheap one i got from newegg that worked wonders on my megasquirt but when it linked to a DFI or BS3 it was game over, the latency would sky rocket.
