Please help me!!!!

Hi I am new to this site. I have a 98 Firebird. When I start it it feels like it wants to stall but only for about 20 seconds. when i step on the gas it jerks about 5 times and then its fine after i get over 30mph. please help me.

Even though it is probably something else, something very simple to start with is the fuel filter. Make sure your gas is freely flowing to the engine. Have you ever changed it? How many miles on the car? Any maintenance history to indicate if it was ever done? Start with that and others will have suggestions as well. It is inexpensive to replace.

Guy, there are 100 possibilities.

Methodically eliminate one at a time. Start with the easy stuff.

Check for codes. You may get lucky and find it right away.

i haven't changed the fuel filter. it has 138k on it. what does checking the codes mean?

Hmm, sorry to be off topic but I always wondered what it would look like if I bought a black trans am hatch on my firebird, even though its red. Looks good actually.

Change the fuel filter, change the spark plugs, be sure to change the plug wires too. You have a Firebird, which I take to mean a 3800 V-6. The wires go bad on that engine often, I have had 2 Birds.

Start with the fuel filter. Then the plugs and wires. That will eliminate a lot of the possibilities.

The computer that runs your engine is constantly doing internal checks. If it notices something off kilter, it will store a code in memory. You can retrieve the code with a scanner to help narrow down the problem. Scanners cost between $50 and $10,000 so you might want to borrow one.

yeah i bought it black and i got tired of saving money to paint it. so one day i was like i wonder what its gonna look like, i put it one and i liked it. ha ha
