Default Security Light??

So I searched some threads but found nothing like what is going on in my car. I have a 1998 Firebird, the security light has been on for about 3 years. I have no problem starting my car, the only thing that ever happens is sometimes when I turn off my car the alarm will start going off. I just click my remote and it stops. Anyone have any ideas?

It's most likely either a bad key resistor or a bad pass key sensor in the ignition cylinder.

In the event of a bad ignition, wouldn't the car not start? According the the GM manual, that is caused by a fault being introduced into the system either while the vehicle is running or is off. The system it the circuit between the BCM and the ignition switch.

A fault doesn't necessarily activate the ignition lock. It just tells you something isn't right in the system. It will probably get worse until it eventually does prevent the car from starting. I have a similar issue on a '99 Grand Am, and it looks like it needs a new ignition cylinder since I've already replaced the key.

According to the shop manual, if the light is always on, the lock out feature is disabled. After the collision that totalled my baby, my Security light has been on. I can start the car with a generic key without the resistor.

Mines is doing this also. It just came on. So an ignition cylinder will fix the problem?
