Default 67 Firebird Verificaton

I have a seller who wants to sell me a 67 Firebird. He has very little firebird knowledge and I don't know the best way to look up what engine it had. I want to know if it had the 400 or the 327. Whats the best way to figure this out? Is there a number on the door plate or easily viewable with the hood up that will verify if this is a 400 or 327? I didnt think the vin numbers specified until the 70s.

I can't help you with 'where' but these codes may be useful to you if you see them stamped anywhere. For the 1967 model year the:

326 engine was coded UPC L30 with engine codes WC-WH for manual tranny cars and XI-YJ for automatics.
326 HO engine, UPC L76, had engine codes WK-WO for manuals and XO-YM for autos.
400 engine UPC W66 had engine codes WI-WQ-WU-WZ for manuals and XN-YT for autos
Ram Air engines were coded UPC L67 with no other info.

Hope this helps a little. The source was the Standard Catalog of Firebird by John Gunnell.

Also if it still has the factory body panels it will have an arrowhead emblem on the middle of the front bumper and also thin metal strips down the center of each grille. The 400 was not only an engine but a trim package.

For the 1967 Firebird only- there's an easier way to tell, and instantly.

Look at the body tag mounted on the firewall. Along the lower end will be a series of alpha numeric codes. Depending on the options the car came with, the more codes will be here. If it has "3F" it's a 400 car. If it has "3M" it's a 326HO.

You can use the body tag analyzer here to find out exactly what this car came with:

Here is another link with general info:

Also, the VIN itself is a partial indicator. If the consecutive build # starts with a 1, then it came with a V8 engine. If it starts with a 6, then it came with a 6 cylinder engine.

Good luck!
