[FIXED]Ash Tray Keeps Opening

Got a '99 WS6 and during periods of braking or "passionate" shifting the ashtray will slide open by itself. Not really a big deal but does get in the way of shifting. Since this is my first F-body, is this normal? Are there any fixes besides just taping the thing shut?

There is a little spring that attaches underneath to the lid. You have to remove the shifter/console cover plate and flip it over to access it. Maybe the spring fell off and is laying under the ashtray or you will need to order a new spring. I recently bought mine at my local Chevrolet dealer.

Removed the gear shift cover and ash tray, took a peak with a flash light and no spring. Did some more digging and apparently this is a VERY common problem. Saw a couple guys glued mini magnets to the lid and console to keep it shut, will try that out and post results. Don't want to tear out my console if I don't have to

UPDATE:
Ordered little magnets from amazon ($2) and superglued them in place. Must say, I'm quite pleased with the result![Happy](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_stretch.gif)

I'm sure someone with a steadier hand could have done a cleaner job, but they serve their purpose VERY well. Lid snaps shut nicely and stays that way until I choose to open it. Feel free to PM me if anyone else wants to try this fix
