Im thinking about cutting an inch out of the shift rod. Looks rather long right now. Any thoughts on this idea?

Update. Since my trans am is hard headed and refuses to run for longer than a week straight. My plans for a new car at tax time has made me consider a total rebuild. may not be the fastest route, but I am looking at completely building my own engine and upgrading everything for a really nice street legal but mostly strip used car. I don't know what everyone's opinions are on best engine size and power for this cars. trans, clutches, suspension, etc.
Basically since this is probably going to be a rather lengthy project I would love to know what you all would do, where you would start, what you would like to see, any suggestions or advice is welcome and much appreciated
