Well I had an idea last night or returning the alternator that's on my car now since it's a replacement and having them give me an alternator for a 2003 Tahoe 5.3L 4 pin 145 amp. KG3. I'm hoping they'll say yes if the price is the same if not less.

The stock alternator produces 105 amps. The voltage regulator is really in the PCM, it tells the alternator when to raise the voltage.
A very common mod is to upgrade to the above mentioned 244 alternator which usually is 145 amps. It will bolt & plug in place of the stock alternator. You would NOT be able to use the original alternator rear bracket.
The car running at almost 13 volts is normal. If the voltage drops a lot with headlights, fans or AC on, and you have a good alternator, I would suspect the battery is bad.
I've had very good luck with Bosch batteries, they're made by Interstate. On sale now at Pep Boys.
