Thermostat question

Thermostat question Sorry newbie question....
I will be doing a cooling system flush this weekend on the 2002 Firebird, 3.8ltr, and was thinking on removing the thermostat and replacing it with a new one at the same time.
But looking at it, right behind the housing is a steel/pipe/line (not sure what it is) that is so close it looks like it would have to be removed also.......not sure I want to start dissembling things with out knowing what they are.
So my question is, can the thermostat be removed with out removing.....what ever it is directly behind it?

Here is a pic borrowed from Google. It is the corrugated metallic looking pipe across the top of the thermostat housing?
Mine is almost tight, not sure I can get the stat out or not.
