Default 80 T/A sluggish after install of 2.5" x-pipes

Howdy,

I replaced the original exhaust system on my 1980 T/A, 301 non-turbo, auto, original manifolds with a Pypes 2.5" x-pipes and down pipes with dual Magnaflows.

Now it is sluggish, power loss and makes loud popping crackling sounds when letting off the gas.

These issues were not there before the replacement.

My car is mostly a cruiser and show car so power is not what I am going after. Was all original until I replaced the exhaust system.

The original pipes, mufflers were on their last leg so I decided to replace it with a new system to get it to breath out better and get a deep rumble but mellow sound.

But that was not the case.

I am thinking that the 2.5" x-pipes system is probably too big for the lowly 301, thus the issues I am having.

Then, would this be the case?

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to correct this?

Would going back to a 2" system correct this?

Any input is well appreciated. Thank you

No, not too big. If I had to guess you're carbed and your high flowing exhaust has leaned out the mixture, resulting in the sluggish feel. When I was driving my 79 Formula(still have it) carbed with a Q-jet, 403 Olds motor, I had bought some headers for it and it slowed down because it leaned out from the better exhaust. Again, a guess from here. I had a 301 Firebird when I was a kid. Nothing can be done to help what it is but, if a show car/cruiser? Call someone about a possible re-jet and drive it.

Time to tune the carb and even bump the timing up some. Too big of exhaust is a internet myth.

Actually the reason you lost all your bottom end power is you removed the factory Y pipe. Its the secret to the reason why it ran so good from the factory. GM tuned the exhaust to make power where the engine makes its best power. Put the Y back on and you'll be a happy camper again.

I've owned many many older Camaros and Ta firebirds, of course over the years I tired different exhausts on them. Remove the Y and they turn into stones down low, Tuning won't help. That engine only makes about 150 honest hp, you can't loose that Y pipe. After it do as you please. Good Luck
