Default Robust and moderately affordable build for an 02?

So my poor bird met an early grave just before I left for basic combat training and I've been saving money to give her a new outlook on life. Just wondering if anyone has some ideas, engine and transmission wise, for a good daily driver/occasional noise violation set up. I'm looking to put about 4-5 grand aside for it and get it done during AIT or a little bit after if need be. The longer I have to wait the more I can put in but I'd like to keep it around 5 if possible. Any information is much appreciated.

Is the whole thing wasted...block, heads, cam, etc? What are you wanting to replace it with...stock or modded or what exactly?

Default I never got to go through it before I left

Last I saw was chewed up metal coming from my flexplate, oil in my radiator, a really violent knock then I shipped out. I'm looking to replace the engine and tranny completely just to safe and set the old ones to the side for a side project later on. It was just a stock ls1 so I'm wanting to put something a bit more ballsy in there mods are a welcomed idea. I'd like something I can have some fun in when need be and still be a daily while I'm stationed.

Gotcha. I went with Thompson Motorsports when my LS1 blew up. They had the best prices I could find at the time and their customer service is very good
