I think that is a fine idea. I would take one decal, and cut it to a rectangle. Then take your original driver's side decal and use an Exacto knife to make a copy of the transfer tape. Flip it over and attach your decal to the correct position on your new transfer tape. That will allow you to properly line up the decal on the passenger side. (With your custom transfer tape/template.)

Even with the proper tape/template, you still need to tweak the final placement, get some rulers out, use a lot of blue tape, etc. before you commit. Using soapy water and a squeegee in the application is a must!
