As far as engines go, no there is no differences. The GTA is an option package that makes it more upscale than a regular Trans Am. Things like a nicer seats, power steering cooler, bigger sway bars, high rate springs, stiffer shocks, and of course the GTA badging is what seperates it from a Trans Am and the Formula. I had an 87 GTA with the 350 and I loved it. 87 was the first year for the 350 TPI. You could'nt get T-tops until 89 with the 350. But the 87 350 IROC's got t-tops in 87. I hope this helps.

GTA's dont' have the Fender Vents that Trans Am's do.
Suspension is the same as the Formula (WS6 is standard on the Formula and I believe standard on the GTA), most Trans Am's have the WS6 package as well, but not all.

I can't tell you what the "regular" T/A had from '87 to '92, but the GTA had special wheels, monochromatic paint, special GTA badging that was body color (white, green, red, black, and I think gray). In '88 at least (and I'd guess the other years as well), they had the L98 roller cam, aluminum head, reverse flow cooling Gen II iron block. They had a Blaupunkt made stereo and speakers with steering wheel controls and the VATS key. They had power lumbar support in the driver's seat. They were auto only (as all 350s, but I hear there were a handful of 305/manuals. And *if* there was a 305/auto combo, you won't find it in a GTA). They also had the WS6 package with Bilstein shocks. Came in both hard top and T-Top (WHY did people pick T-Top options in those things? ).

They were the ultimate Trans Am while they were around. The 89 Anniversery had all the GTA trim and goodies, came only in white, had it's own special badging, and the Grand National turbo V6. It wasn't a GTA.

I suppose the WS6/Ram Air Trans Am from 97 (or was it 96?) to 2002 was the equivalent. But IMO, the GTA was much sleeker and more refined looking. I had a black 88 hard top. I miss it. I want another one. (90 preferably)

I had a black 91. It was a pretty nice car. Check out these sites for info.

I've seen some GTA's on thirdgen.org with the LB9 (305). They were all 91/92 LB9/T5 w/G92 cars.

But anyway, it's not like they are faster than a comparable T/A or Formula. It was like WS6 of the 80's - even though the WS6 package was available then, it wasn't aggressive like it was 96-02.

305/Auto and 305/Manual were available
None had GenII blocks or Alum. heads
The crosslace wheels were standard on teh GTA, optional on the T/A from 87-90 and standard on the T/A in 91-92

Makes no sense, and in all the ones I've looked at, I've never heard of this (305/Auto). Must have been an obscure/rare optioning, but I'll take your word for it.

Well, since the LS1 is a GenIII, and the GTAs were pretty recent, I made an assumption. Were they Gen1 then? Seems rather odd. I do *know* that my 88 had the L98 engine in it however.

Again, never saw this on any non-GTA/89 Anniv (non-"Cat's Eye", aka 87-90). Another rare option?

The 305 was a discount option since the 350 was the standard motor.
There are actually plenty of them as well as the 305/5 speed. My friend has a 305/5speed 88 GTA, but the T5 is now in my 88 Formula.
The L98 is a standard SBC with a TPI induction system.
Looks just like this,

The wheels were an option and not too many Trans Am's had them. In 91-92 all Trans Am had them but by then, there weren't many Trans Am's made, most were GTA's.

Gen I SBC's have the distributor in the block (rear). Gen II (aka LT1/LT4) has it on the front of the engine under the water pump.

http://www.gtasourcepage.com/modelfeatures.html

The 305 motors were available with both automatic and manuals.

www.gtasourcepage.com has a lot fo good information on it about GTA's and options and stuff.

LB9 and L98 are both Gen I SBC, LT1s made their debut in 92 in the Corvettes and in 93 with the F-cars, 97 saw the LS1 in the C5 and 98 in the F-car. Most GTAs out there are infact L98 cars, how ever always sexceptions to the rule, couple made it out with a 305, main reason i cant thik of is, some one just wanted a 5 speed since you couldnt get it with the L98, kinda pointless to get an auto and a 305 though. The main thing I love about the third gen Birds were the dash and that center console. Looked so damn cool.

The 87s and some 88s also had different door mirrors.
