Default Headers worth it?

undefinedundefinedundefined

I have a 2002 TA with a GMMG catback on it. I am undecided about whether or not to get LT headers with a catted Y pipe or just skip the headers and get a different y pipe with high flow cats. I am not planning on racing my car, so a few HP won't matter too much to me. Are headers really worth the $$ if I'm not racing? Thanks!

If you're happy with your current level of performance, then no, if you want more, get a set, and , if you don't get the headers, skip the Y pipe too as it's pretty much a waste of money, little if any increase in performance

Are they worth it? No doubt.

Your car will be breathing easier which will make the car in turn a little bit more responsive all around. Even if performance was oddly not your goal, the sound alone is enough to give it a go.

I have FLP longtube headers and I love 'em.

Aren't the stock manifolds on the 2000-2002 models an improvement over the manifolds in previous years? If they are as good as shorties, then it may not be worth it for me to spend the money on LT's. Do you think the headers will make a huge difference in the sound compared to just getting a bigger Y pipe and high flow cats? Thanks!

Yup !!! Louder exhaust tone!! but it all depends on you muffler!! the cats will quite it down. I was always told If you buy shorties you may as well still to stock Manifolds. If you buy headers go with Long tubes!! More power more fun!! Jus My $.02

The performance gain was nominal for the price, but I love the sound, it made my car more responsive and if you spend alot of time in your car I would highly consider them for the enjoyment if nothing else - you'll always wonder how your car would run and sound if you don't. FLP's are a great choice. I race my car and love the flexibility of swapping out the cats for a straight pipe set up so easily.

Good Luck, Mark

Thanks Mark! You're right, I probably would always wonder what my car would be like with headers. Are there any negatives to headers? I hear mostly positive things, but there must be some disadvantages too.

Advantages:
Performance Gains
Deeper exhaust tone
Easier to swap plugs/wires

Disadvantages:
Some hang low which could cause scraping.
May run into emissions problems depending on where you are from.

Your gas mileage will increase, but your foot may be on it more which causes worse gas mileage.

You also forgot
Banging Y pipes
SES lights
More frequent O2 changes
PITA Install (depending what brand you get)
Peeling coating (If you don't blow the $7-800 or more on the stainless steel setup)
Not a big fan of headers if you can't tell

The only problem i have was the SES light but got that fixed with O2 sims. The coated pacesetters are still lasting in shine for some time now!! I didnt spend $7-800 for them.

The sound alone is worth the money. the y and cats wont make it sound like what the LT headers will. You would not regret them.
