Default 3rd Gens inside!!!

I just wanted to get some feedback of your experience with catbacks. My GTA is bone stock and i'm looking to start modding it. What catback would you suggest and headers would you suggest?

Borla or the Mufflex and spintech combo are the only 2 clear choices

I would do a true dual setup and some Hooker longtubes.

Does Kooks make a stainless steel header for the L98? If so, I'd recommend them.

I'm interested aswell. I just bought a 350 '88 iroc for a DD 3 weeks ago and I need to upgrade the stock exhaust.

I'm leaning towards the Hooker Aerochamber as the general opinion of those who have it is that it's got a nice DEEP idle and is relitively mild out on the freeway (no drone) but absolutely SCREAMS at WOT. That's pretty much what I'm looking for.

My other options are more expensive but also have good reviews. Borla and GMMG. If I decide to go with one of the higher ends, I might go with the GMMG since I already have the Borla on my LT1.

Anybody have a sound clip of the GMMG exhaust on an 3rd gen?

P.s. I don't care what anybody says, a 4" exhaust is OVERKILL and you WILL LOSE YOUR LOW END TORQUE !!!

The Hooker setup doesn't dissapoint. My opinion is that it sounds good with any engine combination and it's cheap compared to other cat-back prices.

gmmg inc. has a sound clip of it on there site i believe. 4" inch would suit the stroker motor guys like me. true duals on a thirdgen is almost impossible w/o cutting the floor board or banging the floor board up. a friend of mine had a flowtech setup or somethin like that, sounded ****** awesome on his 84Z. get longtubes but its gonna be hard finding a Y pipe. keep the cat. headers are a pain in the *** to do on 3rd gens. ummm thas all i think. o yea if u can put an hsr manifold on there, youll like, but youll need a new hood.

I have run the Borla cat-back adjustable on both my '91 Z28 and '93 Z28. I was VERY happy with it, but glad I had someone else install it. Both systems required some modification and I had both systems completely welded up.

The 3 bolts you access to change the plates were a LOT easier to get to on the 4th Gen than on the 3rd Gen. Either way, VERY happy with the setup. The 4th Gen had JBA shorty headers, stock cat, and the Borla and sounded awesome. The 3rd Gen had stock manifolds/y-pipe, cats and the Borla and really sounded great for being just the TPI 305. The individual that bought that car from me did add headers and was even happier after that, but not sure what brand.

So, bascially, I would throw in my vote for Borla. If I had a killer motor, it would do the Mufflex y-pipe and minimum of 3" cat back with the SpinTech muffler.

Yup, they sure do. There had been talk about it foreven and then it finally happened. Part number 14888. And it looks like, at least the pricing on the Borla website, that the price has almost doubled from what I paid originally about 3 years ago. I can't remember if I got it from Summit or Thunder Racing.

http://www.borla.com/applications/lo..._System/14888/

This is the specific part that I had for my '91 Camaro Z28, 305 TPI, 5-speed manual and single cat. It did come with dual/dual slash cut tips instead of the intercooled tips that my 4th Gen had. I actually liked them and the exhaust shop spent a bit of time making sure the were right were I wanted them. Definitely no one else around here with that on a 3rd Gen.

Yes, it is definitely expensive now. Summit has it for about $100 less:

You can pick up the borla here for $799. http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/exhaust

Cheapest place I know of so far.

GMMG is also the same price and from what I've heard, it's one of, if not THE best sounding exhaust. It's also stainless steel. Decisions, decisions .....

EDIT:

Upon closer inspection, I just realised that the GMMG exhaust is cheaper. $799.99 > $799.95

$0.05 isn't much, but it's still cheaper than the Borla.

Well i heard the Hooker on LS1's and L98, i've heard the borla on my old ws6, but not ona 3rd gen and the GMMG rocks, but i havent heard that either on a 3rd gen. Is there a site with 3rd gen exhausts?

Unfortunately, I have yet to hear ANY half decent sound clip of an L98 TPI motor rgardless of exhaust.

I've heard clips from flowmaster and hooker but they were ALL on 305's which we all know sound completely differt from the 350's.

GMMG has a sound clip (a really lousy one) on their site but it's on an LS1 so that doesn't help.

I think I'll save up some cash and buy either the Borla or the GMMG simply for the fact that they're stainless steel and will never rust or rot out.

I live in Scarborough, Canada, and while I won't be driving the car always during the winter, I'll still be taking it out so long as there's not 4 feet of snow on the roads Regardless, they throw a lot of salt out so I woundn't want my exxhaust to rust out on me.

I also just found out SLP's exhaust is also stainless and is somewhere in the neighborhood of about $350.

That might be an option aswell.

Quick question for those of you who know,

how difficult is it to run a 4th gen LT1 exhaust to a 3rd gen assuming it's for a single-cat car??

I may just run the Borla from my LT1.

Yeah the 350 sounds much better than the 305. Im still trying to find some good clips of these exhausts. Maybe i'll just go around driving with my cut out open lol. Anyways dude thx for you info and i'll get back to you on it when i find one and install it. For the 4th gen exhaust into 3rd gen, i dont really think it would be that difficult because its almost the same body.
