My car is a 2001 TransAm and it is bone stock. The drivers side panel is split from the window to the leather and it is about 1/16 of an inch wide. The passenger side is fine though. A friend of mine has a 2000 T/A and his is split on both doors. I have heard somewhere that the panels are just very weak and the doors are so long that when they are open it puts stress on the panel there.

I can't stand looking at it any longer. I'll be fixing mine in the next few weeks.
Thanks for the write-up, Bandit.

also, maybe an *edit* in the title would be a good idea? something like "Fix in Post# 159."
..just to save some time.

Just for *****:

I got mine next to me right now... waiting for the adhesive & filler to completely dry before I apply the color compound.

Did you guys reuse the staples?

I bought the same brand listed in the write up, but its cream in color. When I put the black color on it from the front to blend it better, will it turn out black? or some weird color mixing with the dried adhesive since it is cream?

Hopefully get time today to tackle the passenger door.

Well I fixed it... Since the crack was a little over an inch, it was hard to keep the door panel perfectly in place... so you can still see the crack and if you rub your finger over it, you can feel a small lip.

I put one of the clips back in, the very last one to hold that piece of molding in place, I don't think it will hurt anything.

Man those clips were a PITA to get out.

2001 (not a firebird but thought I would chime in) Here with 55k and no signs of cracking. The car is also a weekend toy with 5% tints and does not allow the sun to beat on the cheap plastic. I havnt read the entire thread but I am willing to bet the sun is drying it out, much like the top of the dash. *knock on wood*

My car is a 99 and has been 85% garage kept and has the cracking. Looking at the way the moldings were stapled in from the factory, there was no allowance for any UV or natural shrinkage of the plastic.

If you take your door panels completely off and check the backsides, you will probably see white stretch lines where the cracks are starting and the panel is becoming stressed. If you are getting stress in the panels, better to find it now before an actual crack opens up.

Finally I finished fixing my passenger door panel. I did not go the repair route. I instead just swapped my carpeted panels onto older (LT1 era) door panels which are twice the thickness of LS1 era panels. I finished my driver door about 8 months ago. It takes about 8-10 hours per panel unless you just cut off the tabs and glue, but it is easy sit down (mostly in the A/C) work. This time frame is also based on having to swap the map pocket/speaker pod from the LS1 panels to the LT1 panels as well.

I also fixed my center console. If you take it apart, you will see a series of cracks forming on the underside of the top of the lid. I used high temp hot melt to seal the cracks, and the console lid, now, feels much stronger.

I also replaced my dash pad (crash pad) last summer. Man these cars are just built with **** for quality as far as the interiors are concerned. My LT1 at 8 years old had none of these problems.

I guess the big question now is what lt1 years/ interior colors are close to the ebony 2000+ color?
