Default Questions about the "few" 98' Firehawks

Yes ive searched the forums....I know they never made it into production because of front crash test failure or something like that(correct me if im wrong) From what i remember reading along time ago is that only 3 were made & I remember something about 2 being destroyed during testing(maybe one was sent to the crusher), 1 of which was wrecked at a high rate of speed on a high bank turn during some fun laps and now only 1 still exisits in a museum. Im sure some1 on here knows and im just curious. Is this all true? Were only 3 made and now only 1 is left? If so, what museum is the survivor at and what color/tranny/options are on it? What are the details of the 2 deceased hawks? (I can only recall seeing pics of a silver formula firehawk in HPP in 98 and a road test of a red 98 firehawk TA in C/D)
Once again, this is just info from what i remember reading a few years back and if im wrong please correct me

Here what SLP says...

To clarify what has become a confusing situation for certain enthusiasts, SLP Engineering, Inc. did not produce 1998 model year Firehawks at its Montreal, Quebec, Canada production facilities.

SLP did however add Firehawk content to 6 1998 model Trans Ams and Formulas. That work was performed at our Troy, Michigan facility. The 6 vehicles were purchased locally from Pontiac/GMC dealers, converted in Troy, then used for 1998/9 model year marketing and sales activities.

In addition, it should be noted these vehicles do NOT contain the GM RPO WU6 option code. While these vehicles do contain Firehawk content, they are NOT considered production Firehawks by SLP.

Anyway to find out what happened to these cars?? Do u know what was the actual reason for not "offically" making a 1998 SLP production version Firehawk

Not really, unless you knew the VINs and had the ability to look through registration records, it would be tough.

It failed crash test standards with the proposed fixed headlights... which is why they just scrapped it and modified the hood to work with the stock headlight setup.

You could, but good luck finding a hood. The '98 "Firehawk" hood is different from the one that came on the '99s. The headlight openings were larger because of the fixed headlights.

Yeah good luck finding the lights too. The son of Ed Hamburger who started SLP had some for sale a few months ago for $10,000 , Plus the hood if you can find one or paying a bodyshop to modify one would cost big $$. Plus it would have to be on a '98 car that has the same vin# to match what SLP would have on record for one of those prototypes.

Too expensive and you've still only got a "clone."

Here are the headlights that were selling for 10k:

It was discussed and we think he was simply using them as a marketing ploy to draw attention to his ebay store.

I had thought the few released, were same as standard firehawk content of 99+ cars, it was only the prototype car that had the read fixed headlights.

all i know is they looked badass w/ that front end on the 98 prototypes and i wish it would've gotten made as a production car in 98. Wonder just how bad or bairly they failed the front end crash test standards????

How did headlights cause it to fail the crash test?

I've wondered about this too. I remember seeing the 98 Firehawks in Car & Driver (I think) and thought they looked pretty slick with the fixed headlights.

Not really sure... I don't know what the '98 standards were for front end collisions. Maybe they were too fragile to withstand a low speed impact without significant damage. I don't think that ever came out back then, they just said it was a crash test issue.

Shots from Motortrend TV's first test of the first 98 Firehawk back in 1998. Yep, one of the things they really stressed is how SLP was supposedly replacing the pop-up headlights with fixed beams.

I personally do not like the headlights, It makes it look like a 93-97 camaro IMO.I am glad they did not do it.Otherwise I wouldn't own my Pewter Firehawk. And I know my dad wouldn't own his red one.
