Default 1973 Firebird question

I have a buddy who's trying to redo a 1973 firebird into a TA clone. He couldn't afford real TA so please no flames there. Anywho, cars got a 400 motor and a TH350 I think. The rear is open diff :O, lol it's a one wheel specticle when he does a burnout.

He wants to get a posi rear, I'm thinking best to just get a complete rear pull. It's a 10bolt in there now, so was wondering will a 10bolt from 4th gen fit. I'm gonna try to get a used complete 4:10(if I can find one) 10bolt rear for my car, so could sell it to him cheap. That would also allow him to upgrade to read disk. However, I have NO idea if the rears are similar width, or if it would bolt up or not. IF there is fabrication needed, maybe somone could comment on if it's worth it or not
thx

4th gen rears use a lower control arm/coil spring/torque arm mounting, versus the 73 F-body leaf spring set-up, and you'll be swapping in a 7.5" 10-bolt to take the place of most likely an 8.2 10-bolt, so you're wasting time here IMHO. Not the same, and one isn't much stronger than the other in bone stock form. Check to make sure the car doesn't have an 8.5" 10-bolt first, those are great rear ends that are capable of holding 1000+ hp if built correctly, and they came under a good # of 70-81 F-bodies and 72-up X-bodies (Novas, Apollos, Venturas). Otherwise start looking for either a good used posi chunk.

Yep, a 73 will have an 8.5" 10 bolt. The 4th gen rear wont work without extensive modification...and then youll probabay just break that little S10 rear end anyway.

It will not fit, first off the width is different, second the 2nd gens use leaf springs and have the shocks that mount differently, and third you can upgrade to rear disk alot easier, the rear disk brake set up off a 99-01 S10 based vehicles fit on the 2nd gen and 1st gen rear axles. and four....
Why the HELL would you want a 4th gen rear axle???? They suck I cant imagine putting it behind a Pontiac 400, do you know how much torque those things make under 1500 RPM? My Pontiac 400 in my 68 is going to make around 250 lb ft.
That little 7.625 rear from the 4th gen is going to die a quick painful death. I say stick with a 8.5 from a 2nd gen. Trust me they are way cheaper and pretty easy to find and alot more reliable for high torque applications.
