Default exhaust size?

1996 trans am

i was wondering if anyone knew wat size the stock exhaust pipes are near the converter.. i was wanting to install an electric cut out. but im having trouble finding the size.. i took a string and wrapped it around the pipe and held that size to a measuring tape.. it was 8 inches. i took that and divided 8/3.14 which is pi.. and it gave me 2.54777 so i would assume the pipe is a 2.5" pipe.. a fellow on hpt says the trans am came with stock 2.75 " pipes.. and he is pretty firm on that beleif. i dont know why someone woulda have changed it from factory " 2.75" as he says.. to a 2.5.. the pipes dont even look new.. so.. ( im not the first owner) if anyone knows anything about this stuff let me know..

Your friend is correct.

If the Y-pipe appears to be partially pancaked, then you've got the factory Y-pipe.

Just be sure that when ordering the cutout, the given measurement is for OD (outer diameter) and not ID (inside Diameter). When I ordered my 3" Flow Tech cutout for my 3" cat-back, it was 3" ID, not OD. I did not realize this until my friend at the shop welded it in and told me after the install, but he was able to make it fit right.
