What sort of problems can I expect from a 98' Trans Am
#25
My best friend bought a 98SS 6sp back in 99 and it has 130k on it with the last 60K being sprayed with a 125 shot. Car dynoed 310 to the wheels with and intake only. Ran 13.5 all day long on 18inch chome wheels and ran a best of 12.00 on the shot on slicks with intake, exhaust and ET streets. Motor has never been apart. He has replaced the tranny and rear end but that was due to him beating on it like a red headed step child all the time. 98's do have different heads, cam, oil pump, computer, intake, t-body, and egr.

I have a 1998 TA MN6 that was built in the fall of 1997. Only problem was the fuel pump at about 21,000, but other than that, nothing. And the fuel pump seems to be a GM weakness, not just TAs. Thinking about trading it for a Vette, but after almost a decade, she would be hard to part with. Not to mention they are the last of their kind.

well here's an update on the situation.
I have to go through a few more things with the bank, but hopefully I can get things cleared up and out of the way within this month.
If all goes well I should have the Trans Am soon.
I hope everything does go through, because I honestly cannot drive my car anymore. Every month something goes wrong and it's an automatic 200 dollars to find out what it is before we even get to the meat of anything. And once I spend that much something else goes wrong within the car which is another 100 dollars.
I like my car, but it just wasn't as solid as it was before and its age is absolutely killing the car.
The T/A should be solid all around, there is one minor dash light I may have to take care of but it's nothing dramatic.
Wish me luck on it guys, I know I will need it, but I can't wait to join the fun raw power of the LS1 community.

I have a 98 formula and the only problems i have had is a slave cylinder problem, water pump, radiator, and thats about it. put down 334/345 with Volant CAI, LT's and catback with an 80 series flowmaster which i have heard is one of the most restrictive mufflers out there and untuned. With TD's and a tune i should be puttin close to 360 rwhp... Also got 110 on the clock. I like my 98

I think only people who have had experience with 98's should have some input, otherwise its like telling someone who has only read the booklet on F-body LS1's that they have more than 305 HP and that ram air doesn't add squat. Saying what you've 'heard' is a bad way to pass on advice.
couldn't have said it any better
A LS1 is a LS1 is a LS1, period!!
Goodluck should you decide to purchase it I bought mine used with 90k on the clock about 2 yrs ago.. now it has 133K and I don't regret my decision at all!!

Nothing all that specific that applies just to the '98 models - just the usual crap that the F-bodies have:
Power window motors, headlight gears, cheap interior pieces, garbled radio display, squeaks and rattles, leaking T-Tops, VATS issues, mysterious rear quarter panel dents, ect.
None of these are necessarily show-stoppers, and the cars can be very reliable overall for many miles if maintained properly. You will enjoy the car overall, so go for it!

I've had mine since 99' in stock form till 2001. The only magor problems I have had are ....
1. the water pump went out....easy fix and OE replacments are cheap.
2. the worst thing to happen to date is the fuel pump burnt out twice. 98' was the only yr to have a steel gas tank with a pump/sending unit combo which *in 99 and again in 00'* coast $600 a pop. That sucked. I'm statoined in Japan now but when I get home Im looking into swaping a 99' tank into it.
I doubt it still ha the stock rotors but the're a weak point and only good for about 10k
This mabye too late for your deciding on or against a purchase but I hope it helps.
I love mine and plan to never get rid of it ..... "cars sests fit in the back seat" is what i keep telling the ol' lady
