The vlecro dots are an addition. The shades will stay in place fine without it.
The velcro does make it nice when you have the shades installed and want to remove the tops. That way the shades and top both come off as one piece. I have the velcro and like it. With the shades off the velcro dots don't bother me at all.

mine didnt come with any, but i would have never used them anyways.
sunny day = t-tops off
rainy day = garage queen
there is nothing more beautiful than cruising the desert at night with the t-tops on but no shades just staring at the stars

Bought the car in August and I've had them off since about October. I might put them back on in July on a really hot day and blast the ac. 
I just like driving better with them out especially at night.

tops off on beautiful days/nights.
covers off on cold clear nights.
covers on when its too damn hot...
Then again i usually never take the T/A when its scorching above 100.....
She stays in the garage with the a/c
