What gears would be the best?
I have a lot more power than you, and I'm an M6 and with 3.91's or 4.10's I'd be just about at the top of 4th at the end of the 1/4. PLUS I get 27 MPG on the highway with 3.73's.
3.73's are more than enough for any decently modded setup..with a cam and high revving combo they like to stay in the gear a little bit more......go with 3.91's if you're not planning on doing a **** ton to the motor and need to get the most out of a weaker engine with slicks and traction.

And I am planning on having lots of power so wouldnt 3.91's be even better than 3.73's?
i Thought about 3.73's because I didnt want to lose much on the highway but my friend has 4.10's and didnt lose much at all!
A HUGE DIFFERENCE I found that out when racing a stock geared GTO with almost 500 HP and I was side by side with him.
If you're planning on "lots of power" it depends on what method you're going but I know my heads/cam combo likes to stay in the RPMs and 3.91's would have me shifting into 5th way before I needed to. With 3.73's I actually have a tractionable 1st and 2nd and then have very useable 3rd 4th and 5th is just an extra power gear for the most part.
You're friend must have a camaro or the extremely new 4.10's for the GTO....if thats the case it sounds like you've bit into the whole "don't fear the gear" mentality. Just do your research and your math and choose the right gear for your setup and goals....although without your motor setup that might be kind of hard.
Also keep in mind the GTO came with a "close ratio" transmission....meaning our transmission gears are shorter then a camaro or firebirds....they did this because the GTO weighs more and needs a little bit extra help getting the power to the ground the way everyone wanted.... Everyone says 3.91's are the way to go for M6's but the heads/cam cars I know with them have basically unuseable 1st and 2nd gears unless they are a drag orientated setup. 3.73's are the perfect in between, and in my experience my setup is better for 3.73's.

"Dont fear the gear" LOL Thats a good one... With 3.91s yes 1st and 2nd spin easier.. With an M6 i dont see why anyone would bother with 3.73s... And for the track with a 26 inch tire and 3.91s I have traped 123.5 with plenty of room to rev it out more.. Now I switched tires to a 28 inch and the 3.91s just arnt enough gear to get her movin.. 6,300rpm clutch dump gave me a 1.51 60' that felt grat but when I watched the vid back the car was boging off the line... Moral of the story .. I just ordered some 4.10s Woot Woot
Oh 22.8 MPG Highway with the gears and a stroker
^^^ Cant wait to get mine in.. Thanks again Man

I have been one wheeling it for a while - the passenger side of the differential is all fubar. But it happens when you race the car a lot.
So we are going to change gears when it is opened up in a few weeks up at Rocksand Racing. Going to try the 3.91's first with a true track in her. See how it runs at the track.
But my car is strictly a car that drives to the track, makes a few runs and then heads home. With minor other weekend driving. So gas milage is not an issue to me.
Since I have some spare 17inch stock wheels - may just buy a set off 28' MH drag radials and see which runs better the MT 26 inch Street ET's or MH's 28 inchers.
