Default 2004 GTO A4 Lean Cruise?

I've heard a lot of guys talking about how lean cruise can improve their gas mileage a lot. With a combination of city and highway I get around 16mpg with a light right foot. I drive the thing like a grandpa. What is a lean cruise, how do I install it, how much will it help and how much does it cost?

Lean cruise is enabled with a full tuning suite like HP Tuners. There are a few tables you enable and adjust. You can set your AFR to a much leaner condition under light load, steady throttle conditions. I have mine set to 16.3 AFR and as soon as you open the throttle and the manifold pressure rises it drops right out. It works very well. You need to find a tuner to do it (or if you lived near me I'd just do it for you cheap). With my 450+ RWHP cammed car with 3.91 gears I get 25-26 MPG highway. It is one of the best advantages to the '04

Absolutely the thing for the 04's. On my A4 Gto with a 3600 stall & 3.91's I averaged 16mpg 1/2 city 1/2 hwy. It'll hit 23mpg cruising at 60mph

How much will a tune from HP tuners cost? And I currently average 16 doing 60% city 40% highway with light driving. How much of a raise do you think i'll see?

You'll see about a 10-12 percent increase in gas mileage. It generally is tuned to only kick in when under steady throttle at about 40-45 MPH so it doesn't help with city driving. You need to find someone or a capable pro tuner that can do it. A tuner will get about $400 but that will include a full tune which will help with performance and mileage. The other way is to go to ls1gto forum and post in the regional section for your area and see if there is someone willing to do it for you for free or a small cost

Been running it for almost 6 years now. Most "tuners" won't do/don't even know about it, at least when I first did mine. I had to go over to the Aussie boards to get all the info. Now it is fairly common place to get it done with HP Tuners or EFI Live.

When done right, you won't even notice going in and out of lean cruise. Just the better gas mileage
