Default big problems

alright i have an 06 and the check engine light came on about a month ago and it came back as the mass air flow sensor. well i got a new one from the dealer and it idles like crap if i can even keep it running. i put the old sensor back on runs fine the first time i start it up, but after i turn it off then crank it up again it starts running like crap again. it lopes like i have a huge cam in it, which i dont and if i can get it moving it shows on the dash saying reduced performance and i can only go 35 mph. this also turns my traction control off for some reason. if anyone has an idea of what the hell is wrong with my car please let me know. im about ready to give up on it.

sounds like you have more codes than just a p0101, the mass air flow code was set becuase of whatever other code/codes were set, im guessing you have codes pertaining to the app sensor and the throttle body also

i really hope it has nothing to do with the throttle bodycause if that the case I have a feeling its gonna get expensive. I mean I've kept my air filter clean so I'm hoping that's not what it is. Could I just get some throttle body cleaner and it might fix the problem?

ok im not sure about this but i didnt know if this is why the new mass air flow sensors are not working. i had my car dyno tuned like 2 years ago. would that have anything to do with the sensors not working properly on a tuned car?

I would go exchange the one you got from the dealer for another one. Maybe you just got a bad unit. That is at least an easy and cheap thing to try before you start looking at other things.

may sound crazy, but check your cats. Just worked on a friends 02 Silverado which was doing nearly the same thing and had the same code, which doesn't necessarly mean the MAF is bad but the airflow readings do not match engine performance. His truck also had a P0300 multiple missfire code as well. When I dropped the Y pipe the truck ran perfectly, turned out the left cat was totally plugged.

Doubt it, OBD II is not as stupid as OBD I. If one of your sensors is dead it will use a combination of readings from the other side and stored long term numbers. It would not even run that bad with both sensors removed.

i had a silverado do the same thing and same code. it was the front o2's. put a scan tool on it look at them. they could be reading incorrectly and not be shorted yet.

Might sound dumb, but is the MAF put on the right way? I believe having it on backwards affects it.

when the car is running (good or bad) TAP on the pcm with the handle on a screwdriver or something similar. see if it changes the way the car is running. my 02 SOM had MULTIPLE problems and it ended up being the pcm. just my .02. BTW i got mine from PCMforless.com. not sure if they are still in business.

Im not sure how many miles you have on ur car but since its a 06 and its drive by wire , make sure the throttle body doesnt have carbon buildup. Can cause alot of problems.

That surge like it has a big cam is NOT the pcm! Check your CAI/intake tube and TB for an airleak or vaccum leak.
Bad CAT causes reduced performance.
Bad O2's will cause it to richen up.
