Actually, the front rotors are bigger on the 05-06 as well as the beefier calipers you mentioned. And the rear rotors on 05-06 are vented whereas the 04 rear rotors are not. But - yeah, it's an easy fix. Just something the OP needs to take into consideration as a difference.
Having said that, I would go with the lower mileage and unmodded '04.

The '04 also has the computer that can be enabled for lean cruise that the LS2 doesn't to get you an extra 10-13% better gas mileage . Honestly on a used car that's several years old it is somewhat of a crap shoot and I'd lean towards a car with lower mileage and low mods that looks like it's been taken care of. Overall I've had a good experience with mine. It only has 43,000 miles on it but I've had it coming up on 7 years.

I have a 04 Pulse M6. I changed the rotors and calipers to the 06. Yes they are better than the 04 but when it comes down to it they both suck. It is hard trying to stop a tank doing 100+ mph. I have had no trouble from my dash cluster. What you need to think is do you want a M6 or auto. Engines are easy to change. Transmissions are a little harder. Personally I don't like the the Firebird look of the 05/06 hoods. The 04 rear bumper with the dual exhaust cut outs look VERY nice. It is rather easy to upgrade the 04 to the same level if not higher than the 05/06.

Same with the Dash pod failures on the 2004?
Never heard of these and have been active with GTOs since 2004. No reference to either of the above in the GTO encyclopedia of websites www.ls1gto.com.
I suspect these two points are myths until proven.

Citation regarding the "more sophisticated traction control computer system?"

I am too tired to prove the brake myth, everyone wants the 2005 2006 brakes so I say the 04 suck. Search it out and you will see that too.

But no mention of the "more sophisticated computer". Agreed the 2005/6 brakes are better. Did not mention that part. Do not know why you did.

Not to get off topic too much but do you guys know where to look to find out how many of your year and color were made? I'd like to know how many 04 impulse blue ones were produced. Seems like i see alot of that color wrecked at junk yards also (knock on wood).

Go to the LS1GTO site, there's a breakdown for all 3 years based on ext. color, int. color, trans, and wheels.

Jeez its depressing to see the price of these things now. I would get the ls2. Yeah there are things wrong but you get that with everycar. Ive had mine for 3 years and put over 50k miles and the only thing that went wrong was the gas cap of all things. Overall I am glad I bought it.

4 years ago i also had to decide between an 04 IBM and 05 IBM. both about the same price, but the 04 had less miles.
just for the record, mine is an 05 and i havent had any oil eating problems, even with 52k on the clock. i drive it like its meant to be driven and have floored it quite a few times to give an informed opinion.
one last side note. its depressing how fast my car is losing value.

Go with whatever makes your pocket happy... Have no idea what the hell people are talking about the gauge cluster going bad in the 04 or breaks warping or any of that **** cause its not true... Yes the 05/06 got a different hood, and split exhaust bumper with a LS2 with slightly bigger breaks that you cant tell the difference between stopping on either cause they both suck *** for the most part... I think the LS2 electric TB sucks *** and a lot of people have problems with them burning oil thus they add a oil catch can to keep it from blowing back into the intake... I have had my 04 for a long time and I personally like the sleeker look of the 04 hood, I changed my rear bumper to a 05/06 style for dirt cheap and the car looks great like that with the 04 hood... IMO performance difference between the 2 is nothing... I ran a 13.2 @ 107 bone stock with mine which is just what the 05/06's run and with a Cam, ported TB, LT's, Tune and DR's I have ran a best of 12.068 @ 114.51 with a 1.89 60'.... So just because it was shy 50 crank hp from the factory doesnt mean ****... Also just for your info the 04 GTO comes with a LS6 bock and a LS6 intake... The only thing from keeping it being called a full on LS6 motor is the cam is slightly more mild and it has 241 heads instead of the LS6/LS2 243 heads.... I love both cars but like I said performance wise they seem pretty much the same to me based on my experience and Ive driven a **** load of GTO's and you have the obvious physical difference's that you can change if you wanted but whatever makes your pocket happy is what I would go with...
