There's a little plastic "thing" you can pry out that allows you to pull the plunger off. I did so because the entire housing was moving up and down with the lock, and thought I'd broken it.
What I found is that the housing is held in place with a screw. It had backed out and fallen down into the door, and my guess is that it was jamming the lock. I replaced the screw, and haven't had a problem for 3+ years until it did it the other day.
The book says to replace the retainer once you pull it out, but I reused it, and and the lock plunger has stayed in place just fine. Then again, of the 120,000+ miles on the car maybe 5,000 miles (if that) were with passengers, so the pax side never has gotten much abuse.

Just went thru this with my car. Found out that it was the solenoid went out that locks and unlocks the car. New from the dealer is $174. Needless to say, I'm still shopping around.
