WOW!Your a smart fella you think of that all on your own...There is no Opinion about it...The new GTO is NOTHING absolutely NOTHING like the old GTO....How can you even compare the aggressive styling of a 65 or a 70 to what a 04 looks like...Its a damn grand prix on steroids...I would like to have another in my garage just to say I have new and old...But I still dont like it..

Just mad because you havent had the privelage of driving one...

Nothing like the old ones. Faster, better handling, infinitely more comfortable and clean subtle menacing looks. Nothing like 'em at all.

Like I said, what you tell me and other 04 GTO fans means nothing to the price of chicken in china. And i've have new and had an old GTO and '67 Pontiac Beaumont AND a Holden Monaro buddy. Infact I met a guy on a cruise with an 04 GTO that owns 13 GTOs of all differnt years.

What about the cost of the thing? 02 Camaro SS's and Mustang Mach1s are cheaper and faster. I don't know about anyone else but I think GM was on something when they raised the price on us for the base GTO.

What ever happened to the poor mans muscle car? That was the original purpose behind the GTO.

I'm not sure about the original GTO - but that's far from the purpose of the new GTO. FWIW - the real purpose of the '04 GTO is to get GM North America the Holden plant technology to build multiple car models on the same line back to back w/o having to schedule model switchovers. Barring that - the purpose of the GTO as a car is to take the low end BMW, Mercedez, Audi and G35 buyers and give them something just as comfortable but with *****. IF the GTO does well, we just may get another poor man's muscle car back from GM in '07 sharing the next GTO platform. Poor sales of the GTO may make it hard to justify building a plant in the US just to make RWD cars if they don't sell.
And please nobody take my comments above as an insult to the original GTO's. I love muscle cars of all types. I just don't like people that insult my car because of some 'sacred' standard of it having to be a silly charicature of a car to have the GTO name on it.

Actually Dan, there are many plants here that already incorporate the flexible manufacturing system they've been using in Australia, and no new ones need to be built, they simply retool existing plants.

Lutz was clear when he announced the plan to resurrect the GTO, it was a new halo car for Pontiac and to help get people into showrooms to buy Pontiac vehicles. The Solstice will be another halo car for Pontiac. They enhance the brand image.

I think you're on something making this statement, since that's not what happened.

They lowered the planned MSRP from $35,000 before the car was released.

I remember looking at buying a new Firebird and the WS6's MSRP was $32k, the same price as the GTO which comes with more equipment and is actually built, trimmed, and behaves like a $32k car. And comparing it to used cars is moot, used cars are cheaper because they are used, not brand new.

If you want a modern poor man's muscle car, go buy a Dodge SRT-4. Everything else out right now is easily in the mid to high 20K range.

i think what they're looking for is a $395 GTO option on a GrandAm... true to the heritage and all that

How about buying a new Mach1 for $27,000 and being able to beat a $35,000 GTO.

The new GTO should have been cheaper in my eyes. Plus for that much money it should have looked a lot meaner. At least scoop.

My dad, who owns a 1969 SS396 Chevelle, couldn't even justify spending that much money on a GTO. So he is going to get a Cobra which will destroy the GTO.

so cars should only be priced on how fast they go (in a straight line) or is the "destroyed" interior of the mustang a big plus too? maybe the ride? no,no, wait it's the scoops they're worth a couple of thou. even at that the mach1 is pretty much a draw especially if you have an inexperieced kid driving it. better yet get an Evo or STI. it's ALL about destroying. right? when it's all said and done i guess i think there's more to life and cars than ET unless you're a professional drag racer or on the boards as an internet racer.

I was told otherwise by people in the know at GM - but maybe they were pulling my leg.

A scoop ??? Pleeeaaaasssssse !! If it needs one - put it on - if it doesn't, why bother ?
Perhaps you should consider build quality also.......
Your pricing on what I can see on the web, places a Mach 1 at $30,000, a GTO at $33,500. Not a difference of $ 8,000.....
A Mach 1 has a 310hp motor, a GTO 350hp. Will a Mach 1 really destroy a GTO ?
If you want a true US muscle car, you'd get the 'Stang, if you want to be different you'd get a GTO - because it is waaaay different to what you guys get served up (that doesn't neccessarily mean fastest either....)

Why buy a mustang this year when a better one with a chassis and interior that isn't 25 years old comes out in 6 months. Next cobra rumored to have a 5.4 supercharged????
I'd take a GTO over a Mach1 anyday. Mach1 or Cobra is just for internet racers driving one everyday is another story.

The guy from arrowhead performance installed a Magnacharger radix blower on his goat and won a street races against a 03 cobra and a dodge SRT 10 pickup. A supercharged goat with an exhaust will be a money maker in street racing.

A GTO could beat a Mach1 if you Launched that goat hard and i'm talk'n 4 grand or more, a certain GTO owner on this forum has run a 13.4 with minimal mods. SLP ran 13.10. Hot Rod magazine ran 13.53 with their mach1 before mods.
