Being a newby smartass is surely the way to get honest opinions from regulars that more than likely have more than $10k in mods done to their GTO's.
The first response to your question was Slicks honest opinion, I agree, a $10k GTO is probably "Well used" and will need many more thousands of $ to make it a decent track car unless you are just wanting to buy something to beat on.
Lose the attitude and provide a little more on what your plans for the car are besides "racing platform".

When somebody asks on a " tech" forum.. Its best not to throw 1 word answers, supply backbone to your thought process. Enough said. You webbies get butt hurt easily.

If you want something to race, a '98 to 02 Camaro or Firebird is a lot better start. Lighter, better engine setback, already a straight axle. More parts available to bolt on for suspension mods.

The first thing, the car has always been expensive to mod and always will be. I'm currently upgrading to LS7 heads which should get me lower into the 10s NA. If money isn't an issue then yes it's a good platform but you can get to the same place cheaper with another platform.
It's all about what your intentions are. Someone like JCR Chassisworks can supply things that will let you take it to the extreme if you want to make a drag only setup. Me, I prefer to stay street strip but all options are available pretty much.
