Question Is this a crazy idea?

I'm considering getting rid of my '01 C5 and my '66 Buick GS to pick up an '04 GTO to mod. I've got the C5 running good, but the payments are killing me ($815 a month). I have about a year and a half left of payments, but it's just too much if you include the insurance as well. I'm not rich by any means and practically sold my soul to get the car in the first place. What do you guys think, should I just suffer on with the C5 or build a low 11 second car out of a new GTO? I drove a couple of customers' cars and really liked the handling/feel/comfort. I just didn't like the wheelhop on a 1-2 powershift(I thought the wheel was gonna fall off) I'd probably go with an auto and install a big converter/gears after feeling that. All opinions are welcome....

I would sell both to get a new GTO, especially an 04 if you're going to mod. It's an unbeatable muscle car that blends daily comfort and practicality with performance, that's it's mission and it does it well.

We all know the LS1 aftermarket is huge, while the LS2 aftermarket will be nonexistent for quite awhile. The 04 also has a variety of different body parts available for the exterior. The 04 will also be the cheapest way to get into a brand new GTO with GM's financing rebates and dealers negotiating on the prices. Don't expect to see the same deals on the 05 until this time next year.

Slider, I'm friends with all the guys over there and help out a little from time to time(favors, not financially compensated). They have had a couple GTOs through the doors recently, mostly bolt-ons and tuning stuff. If I pick one up, within a few weeks it'll have heads/cam/gears and clutch or t/c depending on whether I go for M6 or A4. Best bet is to call Dave, (908)317-4496 or stop by the shop.

This is only somewhat true. At least some components for the LS1 will bolt right up to the LS2 such as long tube headers (assuming the current LS1 units fit in the engine bay the same). The stock exhaust "should" be better than the 04 exhaust by default due to the changes. Things like superchargers and the like may not be so easy to do right away but i've read LS6 cams and special valves drop right in for decent gains. (If you consider that a "drop in" swap.)

I'd agree, get the goat and enjoy the hell out of it.

If you want to add in some cash I might take you up on that...I was at a local dealer tonight and talked down to 26k so far w/0% 72 months. Let me know if you're interested, I'm returning the car to stock Monday or Tuesday if nobody is interested. They figured on giving me 24k for the C5, plus a break on sales tax with the trade-in.

I drove an A4 and an M6 today. The wheelhop on powershifts in the M6 was horrendous, seems like the car needs more rear swaybar and a little less spring. I was able to launch both with minimal wheelspin after a couple tries(the salesman was in full-blown panic mode). I did get a good 4-wheel drift on the auto car around a U-turn at around 70 MPH which turned the salesman pale white and induced a lower lip quiver. I was very impressed overall with the quality/comfort/handling but it felt a little slow, possibly because I am used to a modded C5. Nothing tc/gears can't fix though. I think I'm gonna do it, just need to sell some cars first. Anyone know the the CCW drag package from my C5 will fit?

Question: A powershift is when you shift gears cluthc in shift and foot to the floor all the while correct? cuz that seems to make sense with wheel-hop from the GTO

Power shifting would be keeping the throttle wide open while shifting in a manual. Autos dont have this problem since it shifts with the throttle down anyhow.
