Default Gauge problem

Has anyone encountered this problem? I had just started the car and was driving for about 2 minutes when my temp. gauge shot straight up to the hot limit and the warning light came on. I shut off the car and waited 2 seconds and then restarted. Everything seems fine, but I scheduled an appt. for tomorrow. I bought my GTO in Nov. 2004. any computer upgrades should have been performed by then.

Any thoughts?

Commonly asked question on here...I bought my car new in December and that has happened to me once. Some people say it's a bad wire going through the firewall others say the cluster needs an update....either way it's no biggie and if it continues to happen your dealership should help you out with it.

Happened to me. Quick dealer reprogram. Search for my thread "Gauges Gone Wild" and everything you need is there.

I took it in yesterday and they told me they scanned and everything is performing to spec. Everything seems to be working fine since I restarted the car anyways. Will bring it back in if it happens again. the only problem is they need to see it to correct it.

Ask to see the TSB and talk to the service manager. This is a computor problem that is intermiting. Don't accept their BS. BTW, you can take it to any dealer for warrenty work. Tell them that and see what kind of responce you get. I hate lazy service reps.

It happened to me, around 5k. Pulled over, turn the car off, and turned the car right back on. No problems again. Then I did a search on LS1GTO and found it to be a common thing.

Happened once with my 04, Pontiac told the service rep it was a software problem and they were coming out with an update(early Feb). Had the car in this past week for a couple other small annoyances and now have a instrument cluster on order even though it hasn't acted up again. The mech said they wanted to know if the car was still driveable when he asked about the software update?

Don't put the car in gear until the system check has completed on the dash gauge and you won't run into the problem.

This happened to me on friday at about 4pm. I was beating on it in the morning in rush hour traffic doing about 100mph. So i turned the car on and the tac was stuck on 200 mph and the gas gauge wasn't moving, this was about 30 sec. after starting it. I got scared but i turned it off and back on and everything is running normal. If i see it happen again I will take it in and get it checked out. But Now I Know That This Is A Common Problem From This Website! Thanks!!!!

Have had the same prob with both of mine. First one was about once a week, took it in 3 times before they decided it needed some downloads. It's only happened once with the second car so haven't taken it in yet.

Pontiac is sending a new gauge pod for mine now even though it has not acted up again. I guess that's easier than doing a software upgrade?

Hope it works for you, had 2 new clusters put in one before the download.

I had the same problem. I also have a problem with getting the gas guage to say full. Italked to my service manager and he said there is a problem in the comp. and pontiac has a updated comp. flash that will fix the problem, no need to put in a new gauge or pull your hair out every time it happends.
