at the track here on saturday
there were 3 GTOs
an '04 (auto, tuned, RT mids, SLP catback, plugs/wires)
my '05 (M6, JBA shorties, JBA catless, cutouts, Volant CAI.. untuned)
and an '06 (M6, predator tuned)

times were 12.97@107mph ('04), 13.015@107mph ('06), 13.047@108mph('05)

so it doesn't look like it's a GTO problem.

I'm sure the guys that went will have cut more than a second of their time if they are persistent and continue to try and improve.

I think they will improve their times also with practice- a full second might be pretty hard though without mods. I talked with the guy in the blue cobra- he was running low 13's? I think his MPH was right up there though. I must say every driver I talked with seemed pretty happy to just be at the track. Talked to a guy in a red Cobolt SS that ran 16.0 and I thought that was pretty slow until I found out it was not the superchaged version- nice guy and he explained how to spot the supercharged version.

I ran 13.5 at 105 stock
13.0 at 107 bolt-ons, nittos
12.8 at 110 bolt-ons, drags, tune
11.8 at 120 same with 100 shot

Those guys couldn't drive

Yep, that's already been established and confirmed.

My brother was out at Byron last weekend and he commented on those same GTO's

I thought he said most were the LS1's....??? hmm.. mayber he'll chime in here

He was the guy in the purple 93 Z with rust on the hood.. He was runnin about .2 slower overall than usual that day.. I think it was track prep because he was about .2 slower in the 60' but trappin higher MPH than usual.

1) Good Air Saturday since the DA was -250 to -80 most of the day.
2) Opening Day (green track) + Cold temps = limited traction, however the traction got better throughout the day and was real good after 2PM
3) One of the GTO's I was with had a N20 mishap and didn't run, the other 04 GTO that was with us was a minor bolt-on car and went 13.6@106 on factory radials with clutch issues.
4) You are 100% right about the LS2 guys, but to be fair they were all novice drivers learning on a cold track. We were parked at the 1/8th mile and the smell of LS2 clutches smoking was thick in the air. More than once a GTO went from 3rd to 2nd right in front of us. There were numerous missed shifts throughout the day by the LS2 GTO's and 2.3 -2.7 60' times were not uncommon.

You are right about the poor GTO showing, but these guys were all pretty much first timers with stock vehicles. The guy with the 04 was offering tips to one or more of them that helped a few guys get their times down a bit later in the day. I have video of some of the GTOs, but I think they should remain under wraps to protect the innocent.

I will have to stick up for the stangs in our group though. All of our cars are daily drivers, I went 11.1 a few times (Whipple, DRs), Jason went 11.41 in his Cobra (Pullied Eaton, ET Streets/skinnies), Carl went 11.7 (pullied Eaton, DRs), Dan went low-mid 13's (bone stock Mach 1), Chris went 13.7 (stock 97 Cobra), Pete went 12.7 (Mach 1 w/Eaton Blower, factory radials) and Beth went 13.6 (stock Lightning).

Some slow Stangs battling it out:

Larry, I had no idea you hang out here! BTW, congrats on the 11.1's, last I remember you were running 11.2x's and 11.3x's.

It's gonna be a war this year in our little hp talk group. Looks like all of us are gonna spray till something breaks, lol.

I mistakenly thought the 6.0's were all 2006's. I think their were two 06's- both blue and about four others- two black, one red and I think there was another?

HAHA, I was there watching that day. Yeah those GTO were running shitty times. I also thought those were low 13 sec cars easy with the LS2. There were like ~5 GTO's there and I didnt see one run 13's. Here is a pic after two of them raced.

I am sure if these guy's stick with it they will see better times as the summer progresses. I don't get why their MPH's were so slow?

Thanks. Haven't spoke to you guys in a while. I've always posted here ever since I got my WS6 years ago. In fact another guy in our group just traded in his Cobra on a T/A, so he's posting alot here too.

BTW, I don't see N20 in your mod list Richie.

One guy in an 06 six speed was not showing his times on the board so I asked him what he ran in the staging lanes- 14.4. Said the traction control was a problem. Conditions were ok- 46 degree's, 10MPH tail wind, and a DA around 0 feet- not to mention Byron is a little down hill. Most of these runs I saw very little wheelspin- if any on most runs. I thought everyone was saying these ran high 12's- to low 13's with a normal driver? They just don't look like they 13.0 quickness? I expect some defensive comments from this thread but hopefully some of the GTO owners that were there will chime in as well. Also I must say the mustangs were looking kind of slow as well.
My excuse for a poor showing - engine blew up

Where is Byron? I like dragracing my GTO it is very consistant, I am even thinking about bracket racing it instead of my 98 Formula this season. My last 2 trips to Orlando Speedworld the car ran 12.60, 12.60, 12.58 and then last Fri I ran 12.60, 12.60, 12.57 both nights it was low 80* about 1200' DA.My car is A4 with 3000 Fuddle, Kooks LTs, and LPE cold air. I will say the M6 cars are harder to launch but with a decent driver a stock GTO M6s can run low 13s.

Thanks. I hit the nitrous button then poof, instant loss of power. #7 zero compression, and 2 other cylinders not firing.

I have an 05 GTO 4A, with the K&N filterpak intake and the best time I have posted was 14.19, much to my disappointment. I had a stock 97 Z28 Auto w/ 283 gears no less, which could run 14.2's. Even launching at 1200rpm with no wheel spin I couldn't break 14. After a phone call to a local performance shop, they told me the goats have a torque management program which slows the car down and a custom computer tune will drop the time almost a full second. I also heard the stock air box is better than most after market kits. Don't know if it true, but I will put it back on and see this weekend a the track. My speeds were in the 95mph rangeat the good tracks. I did notice on a crappy track, poor traction, my finish speed was 103mph still low 14's but I was spinning off the line with out torquing the car and 2nd slipped really bad to were the back end got squirrely had to let up on the gas. Only made 2 runs, afraid someone would lose it. I will post after my tune with the results.

this is John, lol! Richie has the red ws6 and has a nitrous kit already. I'm waiting on the heads, see what she runs then adding the nitrous.

Maybe you got lucky and only blew a head gasket? If you lost a few pistons that might not be too bad either and on the good side- you can build it stronger and more powerful for the next time. Let us know what happened when you open her up.

Let me know how the tune works out. If it can really drop your ET by a second I will bring it up next time I see a GTO owner looking depressed about his ET.

Quick Reply: GTO's have poor showing at Byron
