however, the f-bod population compared to the gto population is exponentially higher so it would be prudent to assume as gto drivers we would encounter more bad f-bod drivers therefore giving us the edge. because we all know we are better drivers!

2004 GTO:
3,725lbs.
2002 Camaro Z28:
3,306lbs.
So how is that you have two vehicles, with the same engine and the one that is 400lbs. heavier is supposed to be faster?!?!?!
Now, add 50hp for the 2005-2006 GTO and you're even... Untill you factor in the GTO IS NOT BUILT FOR PERFORMANCE (referring to drag racing mainly and yes, IRS is good for cornering but not on the tiny tires it comes with) and a solid axle Z28 will edge it out...
How am I wrong in this? Did I just imagine the past 3-4 years of heads up comparisons done between these two cars???
ONCE AGAIN, I LIKE DRIVING THE GTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not calling the d@mned thing a Honda. Just saying if you want all out performance it is not the BEST place (of the two) to start.
It is a GREAT DAILY DRIVER FOR A GEAR HEAD and can be made into a beast (as can any car with money) but heads up stock for stock an F-Body was made more for a straight line go fast gear head and a GTO was made, AS PONTIAC STATED, more with the BMW buyers in mind than F-Body owners...
Different strokes for different folks and no matter how you try to paint the picture it doesn't change the truth...

meh. Performance is a relative term.
per·for·mance: the manner in which or the efficiency with which something reacts or fulfills its intended purpose.
BTW, 2-3 tenths is indiscernible to anything other than a clock. it's like arguing who has 20-30 more hairs.![Icon Rolleyes](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies2/icon_rolleyes.gif)
I do admire how you stick to your guns....even though you backpedaled a bit.

The GTO and Firebird are two different types of muscle cars. It's a matter of preference and obviously most people here prefer the latter.
In the 1960s there were numerous different types of muscle cars from small and sporty to large and luxurious. The GTO is similar to the originals in that it's big and comfy in addition to being fast.
I was going to buy a new WS6 in 2001 but the car's interior design, trim, poor quality and awful dynamics really turned me off. The last Camaro and Firebird were cars for people who don't give a damn about anything but going really really fast in a perfectly straight line. I'm not one of those people. It was the type of car that was nice to look at and gun it, but nothing else. The WS6 was expensive new and I wasn't going to spend that kind of money on that type of one-sided product. I had a pristine Grand National before and I appreciated it not only for it's speed but also for it's overall comfort and practicality. The GTO has all the good traits of the Grand National and none of the bad of the 4th gens.
The GTO handles and brakes beautifully, it has visceral acceleration, and it feels good no matter how hard you push it. It also instills a sense of solidity and never gives the impression that it's going to fall apart if you close the door too hard or fly out of control. It is also beautifully made inside and out with tight seams, high quality materials, and sturdy construction. It doesn't rattle or squeak, everything works smoothly and silently and even the roughest roads don't upset it's composure. Every detail on it is nice from the french-stitching to the heft of the shifter to the high-resolution graphics on all the LCD displays. It also has the best designed seats in any GM car.
The styling is much maligned on this site, which is ironic considering the 4th gen. Camaro really doesn't have anything on the GTO in looks. The Firebird was always the looker of the two.
I prefer the modern styling, and the car is easy to make look good. Really good.
I love mine (see sig) and will not be parting with it for some time. Since Holden is in charge of the new Camaro I expect it to be even better than the GTO in every regard.

3 out of 4 of my LS1 cars went 12.9 or better stock... The 4th car, the GTO, wasn't stock when I bought it...
Anyways, I'm done with this thread. OP wanted an opinion, I gave it. The rest is already recorded in the history books, I'm done arguing with people who seem to have a more golden memory than others...
To the OP, AGAIN, the GTO is a nice car. Put it this way, are you a Hot Rod (Billet and Chrome, lush ride) or a Rat Rod (no frills, all about light as possible and most power possible) guy?
I'm a Rat Rod guy.... So I drive a Camaro and pimp the wife's GTO occasionally

Actually stock means stock and I know for a fact that the top times listed for ls1 gtos were completely stock, bone stock, exactly as driven off showroom floor bfg all season 245s and all. With DRs there is really no doubt in my mind that I would have run 12s...and I seriously doubt that your 3 of 4 were really completely stock.

I agree with 6litreater. The GTO, as a performance platform, takes a back seat to the F-body. Mod for mod, the F body is going to be faster. But the GTO is still a great drag racing platform, properly modded. I haven't spent a ton of money on my '04 and I'm running 12s on a slipping tranny. Not too shabby. And after I make my passes, I can drive it to Florida comfortably.
Now lets get to the really important issue in this thread. 6litre, your wife is smokin'.

I was going to say I must eat some crow... Not about the performance (Still say if you want to build just a plain beast you start off elsewhere) but about the interior.
I can blame only my ignorance but the interior is far better than I realized because there are far more features than I realized. I read the manual, still missed a lot of stuff (telescoping steering wheel for example). The interior's FEATURES (maybe not build quality but then again maybe) are FAR better than anything ever offered on an F-Body.
Again, it is a GREAT daily driver and cross country hauler that no gear head would be ashamed of
