How hard is it to shorten the 1st and 6th gear ratio?

It'd be a lot easier and cheaper to change rear gears to like a 3.73 or 4.10......
Alternatives are to run a 93 trans that has the Z06 gearing (2.97 1st), but you'd need to change the input shaft, which means tearing it open. At that point you could just change gears. Which would still cost more with labor and parts than a different axle ratio.

Yeah I have both a '93 and a '01 M6. The '93 with 3.23 rear end gears felt just like the '01 with 3.42 gears. The '93 T56's are rated for significantly less torque than later years are, though. Just switch to 4.10 gears, you will like the results.

FOr true top speed runs. You want to use 4th gear. You avoid the loss of torque from the overdrive gear multiplication. Look on my website under "my z28" there are dyno sheets, one is 3rd and 4th (3rd made 15hp less) and there is a 3,4,5th gear "pull" to the speed limiter, 4th made the most power. Also, using a 2.73 or lower gear will slow down your driveshaft RPM which reduces heat in the U-joints, the rear axle, ring and pinion and lube. So, you'll get more power, less heat, be easier on parts and free up more hp to move the car. I'd not regear 6th for top speed, or even 5th.

Just my thoughts.

Kevin
