Front coil-over setup Q?

Front coil-over setup Q? My son and I are getting ready to install a UMI full front road race k-member and full tubular setup with coil-overs.
I'm a pro with MX bikes, but not cars.
My question is how to properly set the spring preload. Is it based on the stance I want and adjust with the shock valving? He has the Viking dual valve shocks.
This is all for basic setup and a little street driving until we finish the rest of the suspension.
Any info is appreciated.
