Default First AutoX

First time ever Autocrossing. The car is a 2002 WS6 with full exhaust, Strano Springs, bilstein shocks, on 275 Conti Extreme Contact sports. I ran in CAM C and there was a really nice 4th gen and 1LE 6th gen that beat me. Next time I go, I'll be running in STU where I would've been 2nd fastest today.

Next time keep both hands on the wheel. Helps a lot with fine control. That and seat time will help beat down those other 2 cars you mentioned.

Got strano springs and yellow koni's getting ready to go on. The conti's were on my short list - decent reviews on them. What's your take on them?

Realized that as soon as I looked back on the video. I'm so used to drag racing and constantly needing to shift. I plan on hitting up a couple regional events this year and work on that.

They have awesome traction on the street. I hear they don't last that long though. My car is mainly a garage queen so I'm not too worried about that. I also went with a square setup so I could rotate the tires front to back. I also made my decision based on the tirerack testing: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=223

I'm thinking my next round of upgrades will include stainless steel brake lines and a strano front sway bar.

Hey, I shot you a PM. Nice job Saturday for a first time! The guy in the 6th gen 1LE wasn't too happy I put 1.6sec on him. Great guy, so I certainly hope he doesn't get discouraged.

I still do it too (1 hand on the wheel), been road racing for years and still cringe at my own videos sometimes. Hard habit to break but damn does it make a difference.

Great driving for first time. Like S111 said, you will have much better control and your arm wont get wore out with both hands on the wheel at 9 and 3. Also I'd suggest a better lineup at the start, get the car pointed how you need to based on the first cones and straighten the wheel. Starting with the wheel turned its gonna spin more than it already wants to.

Thanks for the comments. I agree the start was kind of odd to me. I don't know if it was just this course or how they normally start you in AutoX but you really couldn't straighten out the start unless you went a little past the starter and then backed in. I was in the first heat so I didn't get to watch anyone run before I went out. I did notice later in the day a lot of the really quick cars were backing up to the line to get a more straight start.

Glad you had a lot of fun! 4th gen cars do very well even in stock format! I have a '02 Firehawk as my back up car that gets raced from time to time and it's always fun!

You sure a 4th gen is legal for STU? I'm pretty sure there is a displacement limit of 3.2 liters. F-bods were legal in STP last year but the SCCA canned that class. You say you have "full" exhaust, I'm assuming that means headers too. Just keep it in CAM.

It looks like your seat is back about 1 or 2 clicks too far..
your angle of your elbow looks pretty flat,, that will slow the wheel rotation down.

Of course its not the right angle and I cant see it that well in the video...

Looked pretty good for a early try..

I don't think there is a displacement restriction... but technically his car isn't legal for STU or ESP because it has an S60. I do not think in a local AutoX anyone would call that out or care. The S60 serves no advantage. Normally the guy that wins STU in Detroit region runs about the same time I do. So it won't help him to run STU vs CAM-C. I ran into this problem when I started AutoX... unless you build the car for a class, competition is tough. That is why I was happy when CAM came around.

Agreed. I run/ran in STM.

Figured I'd bump this back up. I continue to run CAM C. Since April I upgraded the front sway bar, did a strut tower brace, and installed a Watts link. This past weekend I got about 20 runs in between "Solo School" yesterday and the official event today. Unfortunately my SD card was fighting my GoPro all weekend so I didn't get many videos of my runs, but here is a video of one of my better runs from yesterday's solo school track.

Much improvement! I really like both hands on the wheel and I like that you are looking out of the car and down a ways. Keep having fun with it!

Made it to another local event today. Course was super easy and I've made some adjustments to the Watt's link since the last video I posted. Really starting to learn the car now.
